Replacement Control System at the Honourable Artillery Company

Replacing outdated building controls improves reliability, efficiency, and long-term maintenance performance. Our team recently delivered Replacement Control Systems for the Honourable Artillery Company’s boiler and pump rooms. The project scope included replacing the control panels, installing Trend controllers, and provision of remote access for the client.

The upgrade replaced ageing equipment and introduced remote system monitoring and control. The latest system now gives facilities teams greater control, faster fault response, and improved operational efficiency. This upgrade formed part of our specialist BMS services for commercial boiler and plant room control systems.

What did we do?

Magpie BMS Services Ltd designed, manufactured and installed new control panels for the boiler room and pump room. Our engineers replaced ageing Siemens controllers with a modern control solution built around the Trend IQ5 Controllers. The upgrade also introduced a touchscreen HMI and secure remote access for building management.

Why did we carry out this project?

The existing control panels were around 20 years old as were the Siemens controllers. As the equipment aged, maintenance requirements increased and repair costs continued to rise. As a result, HAC wanted to modernise the control infrastructure before reliability issues affected heating performance or building operations, at the same time incorporating remote access facility.

What was the benefit to the client?

The upgrade allowed the client to introduce remote access to the building control system. Facilities managers can now adjust time and temperature settings remotely and carry out first-stage fault diagnostics from any location. This improvement saves time, reduces unnecessary site visits, and supports faster response to potential issues.

Were there any challenges during the project?

The project had a strict time constraint and the delivery of the system had to be fully operational within nine days. Our team planned the installation carefully and coordinated all works to ensure the upgrade progressed quickly without compromising quality.

Was there any disruptions to services?

The heating plant was shut down for two periods of two days, and the client had arranged for the building to be unoccupied while there was no heating available. This prevented disruption to occupants and allowed our engineers to complete the installation efficiently.
