New Trend IQ5 Control Installation and Touchscreen Interface
Introduction
Crown House is a multi-tenanted building owned by Crown Estates and managed by BGIS. A replacement control system in the Boiler Room was completed in November 2024. Prior to commencement of the work, there was a Honeywell Centraline controller and HMI, which was not operational and beyond economic repair, and for which there were no username and password data. All of the plant, (boiler, Pumps, and Hot Water Immersion Heaters) were operating 24/7 with no automatic control.
The variable Temperature control valve had seized open and as a result heated water at around 75 deg C was distributed to the radiators, unless the Heating Pumps were turned off. Both Boilers were operating irrespective of load, and the Boiler Room temperatures in July were in excess of 35deg C. Some plant items had been altered and added previously, and the switchgear in the existing control panel had not been altered to suit. To address these issues, Magpie BMS implemented a comprehensive solution that involved designing, manufacturing, and installing a new control panel.
Highlights of Control System Replacement Provided
- A new control panel was designed, manufactured and installed.
- Supplied and installed a Trend IQ5 Controller with an 8” touch screen interface to enable the end user to monitor and adjust times and temperatures.
- The software has been designed to be flexible in operation to achieve the appropriate combination of economy and comfort.
- Introduced an interlock between the electric Immersion Heaters and the Gas-fired heating of the HWS so they cannot both operate automatically.
- In addition to the control panel and related re-wiring, the VT control valve and the Motorised Boiler shut-off valves are replaced.
- Energy consumption has been reduced to around 40% of what they were prior to the work being carried out.
Results
The successful completion of this project has significantly improved the efficiency and functionality of the heating system at Crown House. The newly installed Trend IQ5 Controller, coupled with a user-friendly touchscreen interface. Allowing building management to monitor and adjust heating parameters with ease. The upgraded software provides operational flexibility to balance energy efficiency and occupant comfort effectively.
